General Stuttering Program Information
We offer both intensive and weekly treatment programs for adults and teens who stutter. Individuals are seen for an assessment prior to enrollment in one of our programs. Occasionally a client may be seen for individual sessions if it is felt that this format is more appropriate. This decision is made at the time of the assessment.
Our adult and teen treatment programs are based on the model of Precision Fluency Shaping and operate on the premise that stuttering is a speech motor behaviour, which may be modified by learning a series of fluency facilitating techniques. These techniques involve modifying rate, voice, breathing, and articulation patterns. We address skill transfer and maintenance as well as the psychological effects of stuttering,
The results of our approach to stuttering treatment can often be quite dramatic. Approximately 90% of participants improve significantly in their speech fluency. A year after treatment, this percentage decreases to 70%. In most cases, the decrease in fluent speech is related to a lack of follow-up practice.
Intensive Fluency Treatment Program
This program is designed for individuals 13 years of age to adult. It is an intensive three week program that requires attendance 5 days a week, Monday through Friday, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Home assignments are given at the end of each day and on weekends therefore it is essential that the participants be fairly free of other responsibilities and commitments. Following the intensive 3 week period, one hour maintenance sessions are offered on a weekly, bi-weekly and then monthly basis for the remainder of the year to support consolidation of fluency skills.
This program is offered at our Duncan Mill Road clinic, typically in October, January, March, May, July and August. The summer months are usually reserved for school aged participants.

Weekly Fluency Treatment Program
In this group treatment program, individuals are seen on a weekly basis for 20 consecutive weeks. This is followed by approximately four maintenance sessions on a bi-weekly and then monthly basis to facilitate consolidation of fluency skills. These programs run at least twice a year at both our Duncan Mill Road and Downtown clinics.
