Speech Camp Information 2017

Speech Camp is for children who have completed their JK or SK year and would benefit from additional support for oral language, early literacy and speech development.   All activities are group based and provide opportunities for children to develop language and literacy skills, and to practice carryover of speech goals they have been worked on prior to camp.  Prerequisite skills for this program include an ability to maintain on task behaviour in adult directed group activities with minimal support, and age appropriate attention and receptive language skills.

All children are assessed before they are offered a place in the program.  The main purpose of the assessment is to obtain information on each child’s speech and language development.  This will help us confirm that the program is appropriate for meeting his/her needs, to set treatment goals and to group the children.

General goals for camp include:

  • developing oral language skills including building vocabulary skills and the ability to share experiences and tell stories
  • developing pre-reading skills such as sound awareness, sound blending and segmenting sounds in words
  • reinforcing school readiness skills such as staying focused and attending in group activities, waiting for a turn, remembering instructions
  • practicing emerging speech skills in a variety of activities

All activities are led by speech-language pathologists.  Each child has the opportunity to practice his/her goals in theme related games, stories, food preparation and craft activities.  Student volunteers are also involved with supporting the camp program and helping out with activities.

The speech camp will run from Tuesday, August 8 to Thursday, August 24, 2017.  Sessions are scheduled in the morning from 9:00 – 11:30 am or in the afternoon from 1:00-3:30 pm.  Children attend 4 days a week from Monday to Thursday.  Due to the Civic Holiday, camp will run Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday for the first week. We will consider time preferences and do our best to accommodate them.  However, the final placement decision will be based on the opening(s) that best meet a child’s needs.   There is a fee of $850 for the camp and a deposit of $300 is required at the time of program acceptance.
